Second Police Shooting Suspect Caught

Twenty-one-year-old Excel Josey – the second man police were looking for in connection with the shooting of a senior police officer, was taken into custody Friday night.

Police arrested Josey around 7:15 p.m. on Collins Avenue.

Police already had a 23-year-old suspect in custody in connection with the attempted murder of Superintendent Clayton Fernander.

On Saturday, Central Detective Unit Head, Superintendent Paul Rolle told reporters that they hoped to have their investigations completed by Sunday.

As a result, police hope to charge both men in court before the end of the week.

Superintendent Fernander, who is in charge of the Southeastern Division, was ambushed by two gunmen when he arrived at his St. Vincent Road home Wednesday night just after 10:00.

Early Thursday morning, Police Commissioner Ellison Greenslade told reporters that Mr. Fernander had been shot to his right hand and to his chest.

He has since been flown to a medical facility in Florida.

“This is a very serious issue and we must do what is right be it family, friend, or foe,” the police commissioner said to reporters Thursday afternoon.

“I spoke with Mr. Fernander just after 3:00 p.m. He is in high spirits and was able to give me an account as to how he is feeling. He is conscious of the fact that he has serious injuries to his hand. We are making plans to have him airlifted to a facility in the United States with the full support of his local doctors with a view to providing him the best treatment.”

Commissioner Greenslade said Mr. Fernander is a relatively young person so officials hope they do not have to deal with amputation.

“We will explore all the best options,” he told reporters.

The commissioner added that the shooting of police officers is a serious matter.

“We have a country to save,” he said at the time.

“This must not be a personal crusade. We need to unite and do something about what’s going on. Just [Thursday] afternoon we received another report of a murder and it speaks to our young men in society who seem fixated on creating mayhem, hurting people and hurting the country. We know who these people are.”
