Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis visited Dominica yesterday to assess the damage by Hurricane Maria.

The prime minister and his delegation toured the ravaged nation by helicopter.

Dr. Minnis offered to have some of the medical personnel from The Bahamas sent to Dominica to assist in rebuilding medical facilities and ensuring that the quality of care does not deteriorate.

“As soon as I return and receive word from the government of Dominica as to what type of personnel and the number of what you need, we will ensure that those persons are here (in Dominica),” Dr. Minnis said.

The prime minister said as many of the doctors in the Caribbean have all been trained in Jamaica and they all have the same standards.

Dr. Minnis added that he understands that what Dominicans are going through could have happened to the Bahamas and it demonstrates how important families are.

He said, “We are brothers and sisters in the CARICOM nation and we will continue to assist and rebuild you into the force that you were.”

The prime minister presented Dominica with a $60,000 cheque to assist with the island’s restorations.

Dominica’s Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit thanked the prime minister for his kindness.

“We are very grateful to the people of The Bahamas for this very generous gift. In this situation everything helps and every assistance helps in relieving the pain and suffering,” Skerritt said.

Dr. Minnis said The Bahamas was built by Dominicans as many of the teachers, doctors and prison officers in the past were Dominicans.

He added that as The Bahamas is a part of the CARICOM nation, its duty and responsibility is to assist.

“I understand the infrastructural damage and we have made an offer to the people of Dominica to assist with their education and the president of the teacher’s union can further state how that can be done,” Minnis said.
