Not even Prime Minister Perry Christie is exempt from the ruthless commentary on social media networking sites like Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr, but the country’s leader said personal jabs at his character will not deter him from the job at hand.
With new age technology constantly reinventing itself, there are now hundreds of social networking sites where people gather on a daily basis to discuss what might be considered the hot issues of the day.
And in most cases, the feedback is negative, but Mr. Christie said it does not really affect him.
“I’ve seen some things said about me that are obviously not true,” he said. “I think there was a lot said about me and I still won the elections. I think I’m enjoying the highest level of popularity that I’ve ever had in my public life.”
“I think people notice that I am now in a final term and that I was elected to do good.”
With so many Bahamians increasingly joining the ranks of the world in putting their lives on display, or those who, by default, are watched closely because of their career much is said, good or bad, about politicians, prominent Bahamians and those who work in the media on these sites.
Bahamians can often be seen using these sites to vent personal, public and political opinion.
Prime Minister Christie said he even thinks some fractions have designated specific people to attack his character in the online world.
“They even have a lady on the social networks who’s just saying the worst kinds of things about me,” he added. “But if one PLP (Progressive Liberal Party) member says it about their leader then everybody cries, but when they say it about me no one cries.”
“They’ve called me every possible thing in the book, but that’s what it is. You have to live with it.”
