PM: Carnival Will Become a Major Event in The Bahamas

Prime Minister Perry Christie said Bahamas Junkanoo Carnival will become one of the “biggest” events on the country’s calendar of activities.

As he participated in the festivities surrounding the three-day event, the prime minster said the support from locals and tourists was extensive.

He said the Ministry of Tourism and the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture will continue to use Bahamas Junkanoo Carnival to boost economic growth.

“Everywhere I go, people are saying this (Bahamas Junkanoo Carnival) is incredible,” he said.

“People from Trinidad are saying that it was just extraordinary. When I got into Martinique this morning, they said if we can do that the first time, God knows what we are capable of doing next year. Really and truly, we were motivated by the fact that we could help a lot of young people find employment and can cause companies to be formed where they can be formed by selling costumes in store and online. The Ministry of Tourism will run with this online and will be promoting it all over. We expect that next year, there will be thousands of people from the Caribbean and the diaspora.”

Despite the doubts of political parties, religious leaders and all around critics, the prime minister said the Bahamian people showed up, showed out, and showed full support of the festival.

He said Junkanoo Carnival was a good idea and an amazing investment for the country and its people.

“I really thank the Bahamian people for responding by their presence,” he said,

“People are asking if the Bahamians showed support. They came out in thousands and I don’t think we have seen a crowd that large in the history of our country. That speaks volumes. For me, we made a major investment to make it happen. The groups have an entire year to prepare for the event now so it will be more thought out, planned and delivered better and better each year.”

Over the weekend, Bahamas Junkanoo Carnival was held in Nassau. According to officials, approximately 15,000 people were in attendance at the event’s opening.
