Prime Minister Perry Christie said Transport and Aviation Minister Glenys Hanna-Martin is “coping well” after the apparent suicide of her ex-husband Leon “Onni” Martin over the weekend and added that party members are devoted to being her support system.
The prime minister told the media on Monday that although Mrs. Hanna-Martin is a “strong lady,” members of the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) have committed to being there for her in her time of bereavement.
“Mrs. Hanna-Martin is a very strong lady she would know how unkind politics can be by being involved in it and being a person of political importance and how people will speak and cast event.
“But she is a strong lady who is coping well and expressed the concern of the children. It is very sad what has taken place. I indicated to her that those of us who are her colleagues will wrap our arms around her and give her all he support she needs in these circumstances.”
According to reports, Mr. Martin’s body was found hanging from the ceiling with a rope around his neck in the abandoned Stokes Cabana mansion around 3:00 p.m. on Saturday.
Back on Christmas Day 2005 Mrs. Hanna-Martin also lost her brother Sean David Hanna who also allegedly committed suicide.
The prime minister added that it is always a very tragic event, despite whatever policeinvestigations are taking place, when someone loses their life.
He added that it is especially hard when to address death when it is someone you have had a long connection to, as was the case with Mr. Martin and Mrs. Hanna-Martin.
Police investigations into the apparent suicide are ongoing.
