Police officials said a man who is believed to be responsible for two of the four murders that occurred on Monday was gunned down the same night, only hours after he allegedly committed the crimes.
Officer-in-Charge of the Central Detective Unit (CDU) Superintendent Paul Rolle said yesterday that the man’s lifeless body was found along a tract road off Sumner’s Way in an area just off Soldier Road around 7:00 a.m. Tuesday, but added that the man may have been killed sometime Monday evening.
“Our information tells us that around 9:00 Monday night, people reported hearing gunshots in this immediate area and so we want to believe that this incident may have happened around that time,” he said.
The man, who police believe to be in his mid to upper 20s, was found with a gunshot wound to the head. He was clad in a red shirt, black short pants and grey sneakers.
Police believe that he may have been involved with the murders of two women.
“The individual concerned we believe to be a 26-year-old male and he was the suspect we were looking for in connection with the Blue Hill Road murder Monday,” Supt. Rolle said. “He may have also been involved in the murder at Cordeaux Avenue.”
Early Monday morning, 33-year-old Nadia Cartwright was shot in the head while on the back of a motorcycle on Blue Hill Road. She died on the scene.
A short time later, 35-year-old Latoya Williams was shot outside a nightclub on Cordeaux Avenue. She died a short time later in hospital.
These two incidents coupled with the murders of Brandon Russell and Prince Prudent who were killed in separate shooting incidents Sunday evening and Monday morning, respectively rounded out one of the bloodiest weekends for the year.
Tuesday’s murder marks the fifth slaying in two days.
While these incidents have law enforcement officials perplexed, Supt. Rolle assured that officers are not defeated. He also hinted that this latest homicide could have been an act of retaliation.
“We in law enforcement are always concerned,” he said. “Whether it is one murder or whether we have four…we would hope that we do not have any. But the reality is that we have persons who are of the view that they should settle their disputes among themselves and that is the crux of the problem and we have to continue to appeal to them not to do that.”
Police are appealing to members of the public with any information that can assist with their investigations into any of these incidents to contact them at 911,919 or CRIMESTOPPERS at 328-TIPS.
