Tourism Minister Obie Wilchombe has dubbed this year’s Summer Junkanoo Festival a success but says there is a need for more cultural Bahamian activities.
The music of Junkanoo rang out through Bay Street as every major group participated in the final weekend of competition during this year’s Summer Junkanoo Festival,
“We think the message is the right message, very sound and to the point, tourism is everybody’s business, I think we have gotten the message out,” Mr. Wilchombe said.
“One thing is for sure; when you ask Bahamians to join in, be a part of and bring our culture to the forefront they do so in such a classy way. We have to do many more, the truth is we don’t have enough activities and so the Ministry of Tourism will out put on its calendar year more events, particularly those events that are centered around our culture.”
The event is designed to celebrate the culture and the people of The Bahamas as part of the 50th anniversary celebrations for the Ministry of Tourism.
The grand finale for the Junkanoo Summer Festival was held on Saturday.
The celebrations kicked off with a float parade from Arawak Cay to Pompey Square and ended with a Bahamian all-star concert.
