Leader of the Free National Movement Dr. Hubert Minnis weighed in on Sunday with regards to the vexing island-wide blackout that left thousands of Bahamians outraged over the weekend.
“Why you think we’re in this fiasco with BEC? They can’t make a decision again, and now it’s in the hands of the prime minister. God help us. Your lights on yet?” Dr. Minnis stated during a news conference held at the Free National Movement Headquarters on Mackey Street.
According to Mr. Minnis, the recent power outage is another act of incompetence by the Christie Administration. He claimed that the ordeal is a result of a lack of governance by Prime Minister Christie.
“As a result of the prime minister and his government not making decisions, he’s affecting the economy. The hotels are being affected. So, I ask the Bahamian public, how much longer can you accept an incompetent government?” Dr. Minnis said.
An island-wide blackout that began on Friday afternoon left locals inconvenienced.
The Bahamas Electricity Corporation (BEC) confirmed in a press statement that the electricity of the last five per cent of affected customers was restored after 2 p.m. on Sunday.
BEC officials also confirmed that the additional engines that are now in service are sufficient to meet customers’ demands.
It was reported that electrical cables at BEC’s Blue Hills Power Station caught on fire at 2 p.m. on Friday, which also caused its Clifton Pier Power Station to be shut down.
The island-wide power outage left thousands of Bahamians infuriated along with business owners who made complaints of losing money and complained about sanitary issues during the blackout.
