A house party took a tragic ending on Sunday morning as 17 attendees found themselves hospitalized following a mass shooting in the Montel Heights community.
According to Commissioner of Police Anthony Ferguson, officers received information that the incident happened shortly after midnight.
“The information that we are working with is that a male was walking towards the party when he was confronted by two men, who began shooting at him, resulting in persons being shot,” he said.
“What we can say is that three persons were critically injured while others are in stable condition.”
He added that preliminary investigations revealed that there were 14 persons who sustained gunshot injuries and three others who received non-gunshot injuries.
The Public Hospitals Authority, however, confirmed that there were a total of 15 gunshot injuries.
Three of the patients were listed in critical condition, and according to the police commissioner, there was one male and two females.
Minister of Health Dr. Duane Sands also told The Bahama Journal that four minors were in that number.
He added that there were two 17-year-olds, one 16-year-old, and one 10-year-old.
Six of the patients, he added, were discharged.
Commissioner Ferguson also urged the public to be careful of the “misinformation” that has been circulating on social media surrounding this incident.
“Members of the public, I would also wish to advise you that you can move about with your daily business. This is not a situation where persons are going around shooting anybody,” he said.
He also insisted that he feels safe in the capital, following this weekend’s chain of events, suggesting that members of the public should instead “watch the company they keep.”
