A man accused of murdering a Cat Island man earlier this week was arraigned in court yesterday.
Darius Bannister, 20, is accused of stabbing 22-year-old Jeremy Webb to death.
According to police, the two men got into an altercation while at the Regatta Park on Cat Island when Bannister allegedly stabbed Webb in the abdomen.
Webb died a short time later from the injuries he sustained.
Moments before Bannister was brought to the South Street Court Complex, police were put on alert that family members of both the deceased and Bannister had gathered at the court.
Fearing a potential incident, officers quickly moved to separate the families by having them sent to different floors of the complex.
However, both Webb’s and Bannister’s mothers appeared in the courtroom during the arraignment.
Webb’s mother wept as Chief Magistrate Roger Gomez read the particulars of the case, while Bannister’s mother, who sat nearby, stayed silent.
In court Thursday, Bannister who was without counsel was not required to enter a plea.
Chief Magistrate Gomez remanded him to prison until December 3, 2012 when the matter will proceed via a voluntary bill of indictment (VBI).
