An unconfirmed number of illegal Haitian migrants were rounded up in southern New Providence early yesterday.
Acting on information, a team of police, defence and immigration officers responded to reports of a sighting of a Haitian sailing sloop.
An initial research and recovery exercise led to 16 Haitian migrants – 13 males, two females and a child – being apprehended in the South Beach area.
After a second and more thorough search, another 15 migrants – 13 males, a female and a child – were found.
A female from the initial group was reportedly treated for dehydration.
According to immigration officials, some 100 people reportedly arrived on the vessel.
The search continues.
Immigration officials yesterday thanked residents in the area who informed the police about the illegal landing.
“As our officers cannot be in everyplace at all times, we are grateful for the extended eyes, ears and hands of our citizens who have always assisted us,” a release said.
