Former Prime Minister and Member Of Parliament for Killarney, Dr. Hubert Minnis commented
on the state of governmental affairs in the country during an interview with press outside The
House Of Assembly on Wednesday. Minnis suggested that the lack of communication between
the United States government and the Davis administration suggests a lack of trust.
Since the release of a United States indictment involving high ranking law enforcement officers
and an alleged sitting MP, things have intensified in the House with many members calling for
the resignation of National Security Minister Wayne Munroe. However, Dr Minnis says prime
minister Davis’s lack of knowledge of the indictment is alarming as he said “when I (Minnis) was
Prime Minister, I was informed by authorities within my government that an indictment was
coming down for a certain figure. If he was not informed, then the U.S. government does not
trust him or his government.”
According to Dr Minnis he was made aware of an indictment that took place under his
leadership prior to any investigations commencing which makes him question why the Davis
administration was not. He emphasized that the lack of communication between the US
government and Davis administration suggests that there is not only a lack of trust but that
officials may have suspected some foul play on the government’s part.
Additionally, he suggested that maybe US officials wanted to ensure that the government was
not involved in these illegal activities before making the indictment known. “Maybe they too
were being investigated and that’s why it’s so important to have an inquiry,” he said. He noted
that a commission of inquiry would provide answers and ensure that the proper investigations
are carried out. The prime minister has said that a commission of inquiry would be too
expensive for the taxpayer.
Furthermore, Dr, Minnis encouraged other sitting members of the opposition to reach out to
US officials to find out the identity of the sitting member of parliament allegedly involved in the
airport smuggling saga. He emphasized the importance of handling this issue correctly as he
says the world is watching.
