The morning silence was broken yesterday in the Woods Alley area as another young man was gunned down on the streets of New Providence.
Police report that shortly after 9:00 a.m. they were alerted of gun shots through Woods Alley, off Market Street.
Chief Superintendent Clayton Fernander said police are actively investigating this incident.
“On arrival they met the lifeless body of a male who appeared to be in his late 20s lying to the side of the street, suffering from gunshot wounds. At this time, the only information we have is that he was walking in the area, and he was approached by couple of persons who shot him and fled on foot,” said the chief superintendent.
Up until late yesterday afternoon, police had not officially identified the victim, but the victim’s distraught grandmother, Mary Owens identified him as 19-year-old Kenyari Lightbourne of King Street off Market Street.
Ms. Owens said Lightbourne, who was not employed, lived with her.
She described him as a sweet and mannerly young man; and relatives and close friends standing by also vouched for Lightbourne’s respectable conduct.
However, the victim’s grandparent admitted that she could not speak for his conduct outside of the home and admitted that he often kept negative company.
Meanwhile, she said she could not believe when she got that horrifying call from relatives, informing her that her grandson had been shot.
“I told him over and over about his company. I say Kenyari, please stay home. He said, ‘For what Grammy?’ I say man Kenyari stay home. You don’t have to be on the street all the time; but he wouldn’t stop. I feel good within my heart that I did all I could with that young boy. I talked until I was tired,” said Ms. Owens.
Meantime Chief Superintendent Fernander said his team is hopeful that this case will be solved soon, as there are significant leads.
However, he sent a stern warning to the criminals.
“We will continue to come after you, and we will put you where we belong; and that’s up Fox Hill Prison. You won’t see me in a suit. The fight is not in the office. It is out here,” he said.
This latest incident brings the murder count to 57 for the year.
