National Security Minister Marvin Dames says there was no miscalculation surrounding the appointment of Paul Rolle as Acting Deputy Commissioner of Police as Deputy Commissioner Emrick Seymour starts his pre retirement leave.
His comments comes after Opposition Leader Phillip Davis asserted that he was not consulted on the appointment by anyone.
Minister Dames maintains no consultation with the opposition is needed for an acting position.
“I am so surprised that you have so many of these men and women who are well learned in the law, it’s an acting appointment.
“If the Commissioner leaves the island today, he travels anywhere outside of the country, he writes for someone to act in that capacity.
“There is nothing in the law that says the Opposition Leader needs to be updated.
“If the Deputy Commissioner leaves the island for a few weeks or on travel or vacation, or in this case the substantive office holder is currently on leave, you have someone who is acting in that capacity,” Minister Dames said.
Last Thrusday the Royal Bahamas Police Force released a statement announcing Mr. Rolle’s appointment as Acting Deputy Commissioner after consultation with the leader of the Opposition.
Following the appointment Mr. Davis called the appointment null and void adding that no one consulted him on anything.
Mr. Emrick Seymour was among the group of senior officers to take pre retirement leave back in March.
