Bus drivers in the country’s capital for many years have not felt a sense of safety and are pleading with police officials to offer some sort of assistance in reducing the amount of crimes that have been committed.
A bus driver and his passenger were robbed and shortly thereafter shot by an unnamed assailant around 6:15 p.m. on Monday.
That particular bus driver succumbed to his injuries earlier yesterday morning.
In light of the recent events the Journal news team ventured to ask those bus drivers how they felt about their level of safety and that of their passengers.
While many were not even aware of what happened, they agreed that the business is a dangerous and uncomfortable one.
“As a bus driver I’m very concerned for my safety because we have a bunch of young men that come on the bus, two men teams and when we reach certain areas they grab purses, cellular phones and sometimes pull guns and you can’t do anything,” said Sean Lewis.
“It’s very sad the way some of these young men are carrying on.You only hope and pray they don’t do any damage to anyone in the bus.”
He added that these people scare individuals who use the bus system and despite their outreach to the police authority, nothing has been done.
Another bus driver says that it is a tough situation and you have to look out for yourself at the end of the day.
Ron Munroe says he prefers to work earlier in the day rather than later at night because of frequent robberies.
“We’re trying to survive making our living driving the bus and this is what we have to go through every day,” he said.
“I just had a guy on the bus this morning with a big butcher knife in his pocket, he figured I wasn’t watching him and when
I asked him where he was going he just jumped out and said to let him out, it’s sad.”
Police have not yet released the identity of the slain bus driver and they are still searching for the gunman.
The homicide count stands at 72.
