A plethora of condolences are being sent to the family and friends of Bahamian Gospel Legend and Marlin Award winner 51-year-old Kevan McKenzie who passed on Monday evening.
Several years ago Mr. McKenzie was diagnosed with Colon Cancer and has ever since been fighting the disease with high spirits.
The Board of the Directors at the Cancer Society of The Bahamas extended condolences to Mr. McKenzie as he was an integral component to their society.
“Kevin served as the chairperson for our Stride for Life Walk that was held October 2012, he was such an inspiring individual that gave back so much of that which God had blessed him with.” said Tommy L. Sands.
In a statement released by the Harris Media Group, Kevan had been considered a pioneer of the modern Bahamian gospel sound.
“He was also not afraid to challenge the mainstream concept of a song, of what people thought gospel music should sound like and he faced every recording and performance with courage and confidence, sprinkling his audience with seeds of faith, hope, love and joy.”
Kevan’s career in gospel music started as the lead singer for the Gospel Music Train who disbanded after ten years together, following this Kevan began his solo career.
Mr.Mckenzie over the past 10 years has also worked closely with and recorded many chart toppers with his brother, producer Dillon “D-Mac” Mckenzie.
“He won many awards throughout his career including several Caribbean Gospel Music Marlin Awards for his solo work and for his vocal contribution to several projects by Bahamian musician and producer Chris Fox,” he said.
His most recent focus however surrounded developing budding music careers for his two young sons Karrington and Antuwan.
Besides music however, Kevan was involved in many business ventures.
He served as the founder and President of “The Service Centre” located on Solider Road and as developer of the Hubert McKenzie Estates named after his father, the late Bishop Hubert McKenzie.
“Kevan was also just recently selected by the Real Men Ministries International Bahamas as one of forty (40) men to be honoured during their upcoming 40th anniversary National Men’s Awards scheduled to be held on Friday August 2nd 2013 at the Diplomat Centre. His son Karrington will perform a special tribute to his father.”
Funeral arrangements will be announced shortly.
