Little still known regarding the investigation into that smuggling racket that was uncovered last month and National Security Minister Bernard Nottage revealed that he is not privy to the intimate details on the investigation as the Bahama Journal attempted to gain more information.
Dr. Nottage comments came on the heels of Free National Movement (FNM) Chairman Darron Cash who recently expressed concerns with there being no arrest in that smuggling racket where officials exposed more than $200,000 worth of stolen luxury vehicles and over 1,000 rounds of ammunition.
In a press statement released last week, Mr. Cash questioned whether the criminal masterminds behind the illegal enterprise were being protected by the government or senior officers in the customs department.
Dr. Nottage while outside of parliament on Wednesday, downplayed Mr. Cash’s assertions as simply an opinion.
“People can speculate if they wish and make allegations if they wish, that is the nature of Bahamian politics and I’m absolutely certain that if any criminal offences have been committed in connection with that those persons will be charged,” he said.
A joint investigation between The Bahamas Customs Department and the royal Bahamas Police force uncovered the stolen luxury vehicles and rounds of ammunition in two 40 foot containers shipped from the United States.
When asked what new measures are being adopted to tackle the issue, Dr. Nottage said that a number of initiatives are underway as the government remains committed to combatting the problem.
“We have a number of initiatives going on right now, it is not in the best interest of our security and safety to discuss those but we are resolutely committed to reducing the smuggling of guns, drugs, human beings and any other contraband to a reducible minimum, we spend every other hour attending to those matters.”
Sources have revealed that at least one prominent businessman has been arrested in connection with that ammunition and stolen vehicle racket.
However, officials have remained tight lipped on the investigations.
Last month, Customs Comptroller Charles Turner told reporters that he is convinced that they are fighting an operation that is connected to a much larger ring.
He added that there preliminary investigations had not connected any customs officer to the smuggling ring.
The Royal Bahamas Police Force is conducting investigations.
