A suspected arsonist was formally charged in magistrate’s court on Thursday for allegedly setting fire to a government building in Eleuthera, resulting in an estimated $20,000 worth of damages.

Rudica Albury, 22, of Lower Bogue allegedly committed the crime on July 28.

According to reports, North Eleuthera’s Senior Deputy Administrator Jolton Johnson contacted authorities and reported that someone broken into the administration complex in Upper Bogue Eleuthera and had set fire to his office and that of the assistant administrator.

When authorities reviewed the surveillance footage, Albury was reportedly seen in the building at 1:07 a.m.

According to Bahama Journal’s sources, the accused who served as the administrative clerk, admitted to falsifying accounts and stealing funds since August of 2013 during an interrogation.

She reportedly acknowledged feeling guilty and intended to burn down the entire building but failed in her attempt.

Albury was not required to enter a plea to the charge, bail was denied and she was remanded to Her Majesty’s Prisons.

Albury is expected back in court on August 6 when the matter is expected to proceed to the Supreme Court via a Voluntary Bill of Indictment.
