A single gunshot wound to the head is how police said one man decided to take his own life on Thursday afternoon.
Police were yesterday investigating the suicide, which happened through Hutchinson Street off Poinciana Drive in a single storey, brown wooden building.
Family members on the scene identified the dead man as 36-year-old Derek Sands.
His brother and cousin declined interviews but described Sands as a nice man who stayed to himself.
On the scene Superintendent Tommy Laroda of the Quakoo Street Police Station said officers got the call about a gunshot being fired in the area around noon Thursday.
“On arrival to the scene we discovered the lifeless body of a male was seen lying in a bathtub with a shotgun at this side,” he said. “We believe he had wounds that were self inflicted. At this time we are still at the first stages of investigations and as soon as we get more information we will release it.”
“At this time we can say that he is a male in his late 30s and there is no indication as to why this would have taken place at this time.”
The suicide happened just feet away from Sands’ family’s convenience store; however, there was no indication if anyone was in the store at the time of the incident.
Police added that the man appeared to be in the house alone when he apparently shot himself.
A number of residents in the area lined the streets as police investigators scoured the crime scene, expressing shock and surprise at what had happened.
Shortly after 1:00 p.m. the man’s body was placed into a waiting hearse.
“Not much of us are as nice as him,” his visibly distraught cousin said. “He was always into something positive.”
Sands’ family said he lived in the home alone and had no children.
Police investigations continue.
