A 32-year-old man who once claimed he was a victim during last week’s double homicide, turned out to be the key suspect and was yesterday formally charged in connection with the crime.
Atlantis cook Vera Berry and her 14-year-old daughter Indiana Forbes were fatally shot early last Wednesday while at their Woodes Alley apartment.
At the time, Berry’s alleged boyfriend, Jason Ferguson claimed he had been shot in the leg by the gunmen that had entered the home.
But, the story behind the double murder took a strange twist following reports that Ferguson, who claimed he was the victim of attempted murder, turned out to actually be the key suspect in the matter.
Several days after his discharge from hospital, Ferguson was brought before the court to be charged with two counts of murder.
Still recovering from a “self-inflicted” wound, Ferguson hobbled into court on crutches.
As he passed, family and friends of the victims lashed out at the man they claim took their loved ones away from them.
“He is a dog,” a family member yelled.
“They need to start hanging them. They need to bring hanging back. All they doing is taking them up to Fox Hill [prison] to eat and sleep for free on my hard earned tax money.”
In the courtroom, Ferguson’s attorneys Roger Gomez and Shacka Serville told Chief Magistrate Joyanne Ferguson-Pratt that their client was on medication from the gunshot wound he sustained.
Hearing this, the magistrate requested Ferguson be allowed to take his medication and permitted to see a physician.
However, he was not required to enter a plea to the charges and was denied bail.
Ferguson will be remanded at Her Majesty’s Prison (HMP).
He returns to court on until February 3, 2014.
