Three Truckers were arraigned before the Magistrates Court yesterday afternoon, in which they blocked off a section of West New Providence.
Jarvis Glinton Jr., 28 of Sunset Park, Erving Walkes, 3, of Bel Air Estates, Wesley Marcus, 33, of Carmichael Road West, were all charged yesterday.
Early yesterday morning, the truckers made a scene on the Western Strip of New Providence as they used heavy equipment trucks to block off sections of West Bay Street.
Three heavy equipment trucks blocked the sections of West Bay Street adjacent to Sandals Resort, not being too far from the home of Prime Minister Perry Christie.
Meantime, the truck drivers claimed they were paid $600 to block the road, but not specifying where the instructions came from.
It was assumed that the truckers were a part of a protest by workers at Sandals, but they denied the allegation.
The Bahamas Hotel Maintenance and Allied Workers Union held a major industrial demonstration early Tuesday morning after officials at the Sandals resort refused to discuss ongoing labour negotiations.
Shortly after 5:00 a.m. yesterday morning, members of the BHMAWU took to the streets surrounding the Cable Beach property demanding a meeting to discuss working conditions at the Sandals resort.
The protestors were led by BHMAWU President, Omar Maynard.
The BHMAWU has had ongoing disputes with the Sandals Resort over the issue of union recognition.
Sandals has refused to negotiate.
Mr. Maynard and a union official were arrested after appearing on a local radio show, subsequent to the events.
Just a few hours later, the three truck drivers involved in the road block were brought before the Magistrates Court.
It was eventually discovered that all three trucks involved in Tuesday’s road blockage were unlicensed.
The trio’s charges ranged from fraudulent license and inspection, to obstruction.
Fines amounting to $6,800 were imposed on the three men.
