Tipsters Helping DEU Find Drugs

Drug Enforcement Unit (DEU) Chief Superintendent Samuel Butler says tipsters and police intelligence combined are helping his unit seize illegal drugs.

Just Tuesday, a 23-year-old man of The Bight, Moore’s Island was arrested for possession of dangerous drugs.

While on Moore’s Island a team of officers searched a home and found 30 marijuana plants ranging from four feet to 10 feet in height.

The suspect was arrested and the marijuana plants seized.

The estimated value of the marijuana plant is $3,500.

“We have, to a lesser extent, some people practicing the cultivation of marijuana plants in the Family Islands and we were able to seize over 600 plants so far this year,” Superintendent Butler said in a recent interview with The Bahama Journal.

“This will always be a concern. We know many of the Family Islands have a lot of remote areas and therefore it’s quite easy for people and residents to grow these plants. We have intelligence and we just try to do our best to locate the remote areas. We will continue to work hard to police the Family Islands and try to combat drug trafficking.”

He said the islands of concern include Grand Bahama, Andros, Eleuthera and Abaco.

Meanwhile, DEU officers in Mayaguana arrested a 54-year-old Inagua man Tuesday, after they found a quantity of dangerous drugs on him.

Police in Mayaguana, acting on intelligence, searched the suspect’s bag shortly after he arrived on the island via a mailboat and found a quantity of marijuana hidden in several loaves of bread.

Also, a 20-year-old Golden Gates man was arrested Tuesday for drug possession.

Officers from the Firearms Tracing & Investigation Unit were on patrol in the Sunshine Park area where they spotted the suspect acting suspiciously.

The suspect, upon spotting the officers, fled on foot. After a short foot chase, the officers arrested him.
