A 19-year-old man, who had been arraigned on gun-related charges before, was back in the Magistrates’ Court yesterday.
Rockcrusher resident, Cordero Smith, appeared before Chief Magistrate, Joyann Ferguson-Pratt.
He was charged with possession of an unlicenced firearm and possession of ammunition.
He pleaded not guilty to both charges.
Smith allegedly committed the offences on January 9.
He also revealed that the Supreme Court recently released him on bail.
“It is curious that you have a pending firearm charge, you were released on bail and now have another firearm charge – something is irregular about that,” the chief magistrate said.
Prosecutor Clifford Daxon objected to bail for Smith because he said he had two matters in the court system – one in the Magistrates ‘Court and the other in the Supreme Court, both of which involve firearms.
While Magistrate Ferguson-Pratt says Smith is innocent until proven guilty she said she had to take notice of the “times we live in and the proliferation of firearms in the country.”
She told Smith’s attorney, Glendon Rolle that it would be best for his client to stay in custody.
She later denied him bail.
He will return to court on February17 for a status hearing.
