Straw Vendors Honoured

Dozens of straw vendors were honoured for their contribution to the Bahamian community at large during a ceremony held near Woods Rodgers Wharf Thursday afternoon.

Key Speaker Deputy Prime Minister Philip ‘Brave’ Davis commended straw vendors, straw practitioners and wood carvers and reminded them that they catapulted individuals – including him – to where they are today.

“We all know what this means to us as a country,” he said.

“I applaud the Straw Market Authority for their continued efficiency and creativity and I especially commend the chairman Mr. Kevin Simmons for his steadfast commitment to the cause.”

It is with renewed optimism Mr. Davis says everyone will be able to move forward.

Minister of Tourism Obie Wilchcombe also brought remarks and likewise reminded all of the vendors of their roles in strengthening the economy and representing The Bahamas worldwide.

“The truth is no matter where you go in the world you remain an iconic figure to our industry,” he said.

“We have to do more to ensure that you are not only honoured but given all that you must have to ensure that your business can flourish and grow so that you can become an example of the entrepreneurs of our future.”

The minister also took the time to address an issue he says he is concerned about at Port Lucaya in Grand Bahama.

“It is not right for our straw vendors who have been there, have seen the place grow and given all they have and invested and today have been put out and not given the opportunity and treated as if they are not part of our country,” Mr. Wilchcombe said.

“We must get the message across to all investors that you are a guest in our country.”

The celebrations concluded with the honorees receiving plaques.
