The Bahama Rock Café observed “Older Persons Month” by hosting more than a dozen senior citizens from the Persis Rodgers Home for the Elderly to lunch yesterday.
The restaurant, owned by Cleveland Duncombe, is in its second year of honouring seniors during the month recognised by the United Nations as Older Persons Month.
Mr. Duncombe said the luncheon is important to his Fort Fincastle establishment which believes strongly in giving back.
“These people have paved the way for all of us, yet they are the forgotten ones,” Mr. Duncombe said. “Like the old African proverb says, “It takes a village” and almost all of us are here because these precious jewels have made a way for us.”
“This means so much to us to be able to do this for them. It is a small thing, but we are grateful to be in a position to be able to do this.”
Francis Ledee, who works with the home, said the call from Bahama Rock came as a surprise. But she said the seniors were excited to get out and have some fun.
“We are so thankful for this occasion,” she said. “These folks got all pretty and they are so happy to be here and we are all so thankful to Mr. Duncombe and his staff for providing us with this very special day.”
The seniors sang and enjoyed conch fritters and okra soup.
Bahama Rock is located at Prison Lane in Fort Fincastle.
Mr. Duncombe said he plans on doing more events that give back to both the Fort Fincastle community and the country at large.
