A second suspect has been taken into custody in connection to an American tourist’s murder.
Police have confirmed that they arrested a 19-year-old Abraham Street, Kemp Road man in connection with the shooting death of 34-year-old Kyle Nicholas Bruner, a sailor from Chicago.
The West Fletcher Street resident was shot in the neck Sunday on East Bay Street as he attempted to stop muggers from robbing a woman.
According to reports, three men tried to steal her jewellery.
On Monday, Mobile Division officers arrested Anton Bastian aka “Molly” at 12:30 p.m. on Market Street and Trinity Place.
The 20-year-old is a Clarke Alley resident.
Police believe they are close to closing in on a third suspect, Leo Bethel of Balls Alley, Shirley Street.
According to ABC news, Bruner’s parents live on Chicago’s Northwest Side.
Family members say Bruner was a former special education teacher and was working as a first mate on the Liberty Chipper, which was moving through The Bahamas.
The ship was docked in Nassau when the shooting occurred.
On the morning of Mother’s Day, US Embassy officials called Bruner’s parents with the bad news.
“He never liked bullies, and he never stood for people around him being bullied, and so, this was what he would do,” said the victim’s father, Rick Bruner.
His crew mates were with him at the time of the incident. Ryan Downs said he was aware of warnings about a crime increase in The Bahamas.
“I’ve worked in Nassau, I’ve worked in The Bahamas and I knew it to be a dangerous place,” he said.
Mr. Bruner says his son just got his captain’s licence and would have been setting sail for Boston in about a week.
He was hoping to soon work on a tall ship in Chicago.
Family members are now making funeral arrangements.
“He’ll be cremated, and then one of the tall ships will scatter his ashes on the ocean,” said Mr. Bruner.
Murder Victim Identified
Police have identified the man shot and killed in southeastern New Providence as 21-year-old Wiscaly Genois of Bamboo Town.
Genois was shot to death early Sunday morning at the East Street South Shopping Plaza.
Police said the victim was standing outside with a group of people at 2:15 a.m. when a man approached him and opened fire.
