Sears Resigns from COB Council

Former Attorney General Alfred Sears has resigned from his position as Chairman of the Council of the College of The Bahamas due to his return to politics effective May 31st, 2016.

Mr. Sears in a letter addressed to the Minister of Education Jerome Fitzgerald indicated that his reason for the leave was due to him being ratified as a candidate of the Progressive Liberal Party and also his desire to remove partisan politics from the tertiary institution.

Mr. Sears expressed gratitude to Mr. Fitzgerald for affording the opportunity.

“I thank you for having afforded me the singular privilege of serving as Chairman of The College of The Bahamas during this period of historic transition to the University of The Bahamas,” he said in a letter to Mr. Fitzgerald.

Mr. Fitzgerald thanked Mr. Sears and commended him for his work with the College Council.

“I wish Mr. Sears well in his future endeavors and I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Mr. Sears for his exemplary service as Chairman of the Council of The College of the Bahamas. He and his colleagues are to be commended for their stellar performance and commitment to ensure the transition of COB to university status,” he said.

Last week during the budget communication in the House of Assembly after the reading by Prime Minister Perry Christie, Minister Fitzgerald moved for the first reading of a Bill to start The University of The Bahamas.

The former attorney governor general was ratified as a candidate of the PLP for the Fort Charlotte Constituency over a week ago, a constituency he represented from 2002-2012.

Since his ratification Mr. Sears has said there needs to be a formation of an Integrity Commission which would investigate the conduct and Parliamentary members, senators and senior public officials along with term limits for prime ministers.
