A 45-year-old corrections officer will find out what it is to be on the opposite side of the prison bars this after being formally charged and found guilty of one count of possession of illegal narcotics with the intent to supply.
Ex prison guard Logan Zacchaeus Smith was sentenced to one year in jail after a routine search at the Bahamas Department of Correctional Services on June 20 where authorities found six ounces of marijuana on him.
A further search of his Hampshire Street home discovered $1,285 which is believed to be the proceeds of the illicit sale. From the money, $300 was seized. It was confirmed that the remainder was from a church asue draw as smith was also a local pastor.
Magistrate Janine Weech said she was inclined to give Smith a custodial sentence due to him being a senior corrections officer and her having to send a message that law enforcement officers are held to a higher standard and that his decision was nothing “less than stupid”.
Smith was sentenced to one year jail time and fined $1,000 and if the fine is not paid before the end of the term and additional six months will be added to the sentence.
