A police officer could lose his/her job within the upcoming weeks if it is determined that a teenaged girl escaped police custody because of negligence.
Commissioner of Police Ellison Greenslade said yesterday at a press conference that police officers are usually fired for that type of mishap.
During the August Monday holiday, a 15-year-old girl in police custody at the Grove Police Station escaped through a window, while police thought she was using the bathroom.
She was later turned in by her mother.
Mr. Greenslade said he has the file on his desk and he would be reviewing it himself.
“Officers lose their job when things like that happen,” he said, “I believe you’ve heard that before.”
“It’s unfortunate. But the public expects us to always be professional and deal with these things in the proper way. I’m not going to prejudice this case any further, except to say that the file is on my desk.”
When asked if the information would be made known to the public when a decision is made, the commissioner said, “You’ll know. When officers lose their jobs I tell you.”
That teen girl was last week arraigned on several charges including attempted armed robbery, possession of an unlicensed firearm and escape from custody.
