Prime Minister Christie is speaking up against death threats issued to several key Free National Movement (FNM) members, and claimed that just two days ago one of his own relatives were threatened.
The prime minister said as much while speaking to the media on Thursday on Thursday in Rawson’s Square.
“Last night a member of my family called me to tell me about a very significant threat to them by somebody who is armed,” he said. “I had the police involved in that because it has very serious implications, and this is a very professional Bahamian that is a member of my family.”
Prime Minister Christie’s revelation comes after Opposition Leader Dr. Hubert Minnis, FNM Deputy Leader Loretta Butler-Turner, FNM Chairman Darron Cash, FNM Deputy Chairman Dr. Duane Sands and others received a very graphic type-written letter from warning them to resign.
The letter was signed by “FNMs.”
The letter read: “Dear Mr. Leader, we in the FNM are sick and tired of you and Dr. Sands and Brensil stink attitude. You, Darron Cash and Loretta and Theo Neily and Brensil. All of you better resign now if not the mobs will be shooting you all in your neck one by one.”
According to the FNM, the letter which was received on March 2014 was initially considered a prank; nonetheless it was forwarded to Deputy Commissioner of Police Quinn McCartney.
The prime minister said that he has personally received death threats in past years, but stressed that death threats are no laughing matter, regardless of the context of which they are issued.
“One has to take everything seriously in our country when it comes to threats,” he said. “People are doing the right thing by talking about it because we as law enforcement are the culture of what is accepted. Those are matters that are so repugnant to our way of life that we must not hesitate to express in our strongest possible terms our anger at this kind of development, even if people are joking.
“We have to exercise the greatest care because when we look around at countries even in our region we see things that have happened that we do not want to happen here.”
Chaiman Cash has issued a release assured that the full leadership team remains focused and committed to addressing the matters that affect the Bahamian people—including the few and isolated ones who do not mean the party well. He added that they we will not be intimidated by idle threats or distractions.
