o
Rumors have been confirmed that the prime minister has requested and accepted the resignation
of Sylvanus Petty as executive chairman of the Water and Sewerage Corporation (WSC).
In a press statement from the Office of The Prime Minister on Wednesday afternoon, it was
confirmed that Acting Prime Minister Chester Cooper accepted the resignation on behalf of
Prime Minister Philip Davis. The statement said the OPM thanks Mr. Petty for his service and
that the deputy chairman will serve as acting executive chairman.
Mr. Petty’s resignation came after it was revealed in the Supreme Court last week, while under
cross examination, that his daughter Sylatheia Gierszewski was awarded a $26,000 contract from
the WSC in the name of a company called Mainscape Maintenance. Mr. Petty also confirmed
that because the contract was not above $50,000 it did not go before the executive board for
approval.
Earlier this week, the opposition Free National Movement (FNM) through its chairman Dr.
Duane Sands called for Mr. Petty’s resignation. On Tuesday PM Davis said the government
would not be dictated to by the FNM and promised to look into the details of the circumstances
before taking the appropriate actions.
PM Davis is currently out of country attending the CARICOM-Saudi Arabia Summit in Riyadh,
Saudi Arabi.
