New York Man Charged With Rape

A New Yorker was charged with rape yesterday in the Magistrate’s Court.

Twenty-six-year-old Ryan Patrick Doherty is accused of having sexual intercourse with a 20-year-old woman without her consent on Paradise Island.

He was arraigned before Acting Chief Magistrate Joyann Ferguson-Pratt and not required to enter a plea.

However, the arraignment was adjourned for a few minutes when the issue of bail arose.

The prosecution objected explaining that Doherty is a non-Bahamian and does not have any status in this country.

The prosecution further explained that as a result of those issues, there is a likelihood that Doherty would abscond.

Meanwhile, Kimberley Evans, who represents Doherty, told the magistrate that he is employed as a network engineer and was expected to return to work on Wednesday.

The attorney said her client did not have a prior record in The Bahamas or in the United States and is “well-educated.”

She also said that she feels cash bail would be acceptable in the circumstances.

But after taking a break the magistrate returned explaining that because of certain amendments made to the Bail Act in 2011, she could not grant him bail.

Therefore, his application was denied.

However, she told him that he can file an appeal to the Supreme Court.

He was remanded to Her Majesty’s Prisons (HMP) until November 8. That is when he is scheduled to return to court.
