While Grand Bahama is a popular tourism location, it has recently been seeking to improve its attractiveness to tourists.
Some surveys indicated that there needed to be more fun activities on the island, maximising the sun and sand Grand Bahama is already known for.
The Grand Bahama Port Authority (GBPA) in seeking to improve the tourism offerings on the island, invited Internationally renowned Cabo Adventures and Vallarta Adventures to the island to provide fun activities for its increasing tourism numbers.
The Mexican based company has achieved a great deal of success in Latin America, as both Vallarta and Cabo Adventures have been awarded and featured as a leading tour company in Mexico by various Cruise lines and well known companies like Trip Advisor, National Geographic, E! Entertainment Television, Discovery Channel, BBC, NBC, The Amazing Race, Good Morning America, The New York Times and Travel Channel.
With the help of the GBPA the company opened Bahamas Adventures here in Grand Bahama and have partnered with well-known local tourism leader, Hadley Forbes of Forbes Charter. Their establishment in The Bahamas was in instant success, as Bahamas Adventures recently won the Caribbean Fleet Operator Award for 2014.
The company took over the Pirates of the Bahamas facility in late 2013. It had been languishing in disrepair after closing some years ago. The 1,200 square foot property sits on the southern shoreline of Freeport, on a spectacular white sand beach. Bahamas Adventures now offers tours that travel around the island with stops at their beach location, which includes snorkeling, kayaking, water activities and great island meals – including fresh conch salad. They have also created a beach and shopping tour, which allows over 250 guests a week to play at the beach and then end their adventure with a Port Lucaya Marketplace trip.
“At Bahamas Adventures we are dedicated to adventure! Our trips are safe, learning experiences designed for people who want to have fun exploring and enjoying all that Grand Bahama has to offer,” said Cesar Ochoa, General Manager of Bahamas Adventures. “We are a young company; staffed by free-spirited, adventurous Bahamians from a variety of backgrounds and islands – but unified by a passion to provide quality service throughout our complete range of experiences.”
Currently Ochoa is the only international employee, with the balance of the employees being all Bahamian. “Currently we have fifty employees including myself,” said Ochoa. “Moreover, with the success we are having showcasing the biodiversity and natural beauty of Freeport, we are looking to expand our tour offerings, and as a result we hope to add an additional ten employees to our family.”
Bahamas Adventures is open Friday to Tuesday 11am to 5pm and is located on Jolly Rodger Dr next to Taino Beach Resort. Locals are welcome and can learn more about Bahamas Adventures on their Facebook page or their website at www.bahamas-adventures.com.
“My experience at Bahamas Adventures has been very motivational and full of growth,” said Candera Goodman, Restaurant Supervisor at Bahamas Adventures and Freeport native. “I started working for the company more than a year ago as a bartender, from there I was transferred to the floor team and I’m now the restaurant supervisor. If I could sum up my experience working for our company I would say adventurous, pleasant, compassionate and educational. I am very proud to be a part of Bahamas Adventures team!”
