Murder Suspect Arraigned

Police arraigned a suspect on murder charges yesterday after two months.

 Jahamaro Edgecombe, 21, of Water Street was arraigned before Chief Magistrate for the murder of Kenyari Lightbourne.

 According to court dockets, Edgecombe is charged with the June 21st killing of Lighbourne which occurred during the early morning hours.

 Police said on arrival they met the lifeless body of Lighbourne lying on the side of street, dead from gunshot wounds.

 When our news team spoke to Lightbourne’s grandmother whom the deceased lived with, Mary Owens, described him as a sweet and mannerly young man, along with relatives and close friends.

 Owens, however admitted that she could not speak to his conduct outside of the home.

 Edgecombe’s counsel, attorney Ian Cargill said during his client’s time being held, he was beaten, and was forced to sign a statement.

 He also added outside of court, that his client was randomly picked up on the street as police were passing, and made to be the fall guy.

 The attorney said his client asked to see a doctor for an ear problem along with injuries to his chest, however was denied access to a physician.

 Attorney Cargill added that after 48 hours his client was not told the reason as to why he was being held.

 Chief Magistrate Forbes said he would make a note of the troubles voiced in court.

 Edgecombe was remanded to the Bahamas Department of Correctional Services until September 16.
