Moncur PI Adjourned To October

The preliminary inquiry into a matter involving community activist Rodney Moncur has been adjourned to October because a witness failed to show up to court.

Inspector Mark Barrett, the man whom Moncur said arrested him, was expected to appear in court on Friday but never showed.

The prosecution told Magistrate Constance Delancey, who is presiding over the matter, that Inspector Barrett was stuck in Canada due to bad weather.

At that time, Moncur asked if the matter could be adjourned until late afternoon to allow Inspector Barrett to get back to New Providence, but the judge said that would not “make any sense.”

Following the adjournment, Moncur described all the delays in his matter as “gangsterism.”

On April 4, Moncur was charged with committing a grossly indecent act.

Police allege that Moncur posted images showing Jamie Smith’s remains.

Smith died while in police custody back in February.

A preliminary inquiry is being held to see if there is enough evidence in the case to send it to the Supreme Court.

The first witness to be called weeks ago was Detective Corporal 2540 Olsen Noel, who is attached to the High Tech Crimes Unit at the Central Detective Unit (CDU).

Corporal Noel was asked at the time what his involvement in the matter was on March 30, 2012.

He told the magistrate that around 8:35 a.m. he witnessed an interview with Moncur and Detective Inspector Mr. Barrett.

The officer said during the interview Moncur admitted to posting indecent images on his Facebook page but denied breaking into the city morgue.

He also said that Moncur declined to give a written statement and declined to read over the interview form.

The matter has now been adjourned to October 4 at 10:00 a.m.
