It is “really sad” to see the leader of the opposition Michael Pintard trying to take credit for the
Prime Minister’s decision to make adjustments within his team of cabinet ministers, said
Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) Chairman Fred Mitchell while speaking from the city of
Chicago, USA on Monday morning.
In his capacity as Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr Mitchell accompanied Prime Minister Philip
Davis on an official visit to Chicago to mark the 50 th anniversary of The Bahamas
Independence with the Bahamian community and business community that city over a two
days period.
Mr Mitchell said Mr Pintard and his collegues are “living in a dream world, and an air of
unreality.” He claims that there are strong divisions in the Free National Movement among
the leadership and recommended that “Duane Sands and Michael Pintard better mind their
own business and stop fooling with the PLP.”
Mr Mitchell then shared details about the PLP’s 55th National Convention that will take place
November 9th and 10th at Baha Mar resort under the theme “Building On Progress: Driving
Change.”
In the written statement Minister Mitchell explained a number of new procedures in regards to
nominations for party officers. He said nominations will now be accepted on forms; and that
under the new procedures no nominations will take place from the floor. All nominations will
take place in writing and must be entered at least 14 days before the convention to the
Secretary General who is the returning officer for the elections.
Twenty delegates will be taken for each branch in accordance with the party’s new
constitution. According to Mr Mitchell all posts will be open.
He said the council has also set a non-refundable fee for anyone who wishes to run for office.
“For the office of Leader, 2,500 dollars; Deputy Leader, 2,000 dollars; Chairman, 1,500
dollars and all other offices, 250 dollars.” The PLP’s last convention was held in 2019.
