The National Insurance Board (NIB) Minister Shane Gibson said that he’s not sure who was responsible for leaking the findings of that highly anticipated audit to the media.
Several findings of the audit were reported, with one of them being that suspended NIB Director Algernon Cargill and others received bonuses that weren’t approved by the cabinet.
Some of those bonuses totaled more than $720,000.
Earlier last week, Mr. Gibson said that only he, the prime minister and two auditors had copies of the audit.
However, yesterday the minister said that since then, the audit findings have found its way into the hands of several persons, which makes it difficult to determine who would have leaked the audit.
“At the time I told you all that only four people had access to the audit, Mr. Cargill and his lawyers had not yet had a chance to look at it and neither did the NIB board members,” he said.
“Since that time, on either Wednesday or Thursday we sent a full copy to Mr. Cargill and his lawyer and on Friday we gave all of the board members full copies of the report.”
The leaked report also has information of contracts allegedly being awarded to Mr. Cargill’s family members.
It is also being alleged that along with bonuses and his annual salary Mr. Cargill took home nearly $195,000 between January 2010 and May 2012.
Recently, Mr. Gibson said that the findings of the audit were “shocking.”
As for then the findings will be officially released to the public, the minister said that he’s not sure, but adds that it should be soon.
“I’m being guided and as soon as I’m able to table it in Parliament, I will,” he said.
“I was hoping that we would be able to get through this entire process as anticipated by us and as advised by my advisors, but unfortunately that wasn’t the case.”
However, Mr. Gibson said that while he is disappointed the information may have been leaked, he doesn’t fear that information may have been tampered with and said, “It’s just one of those things that happens.”
