The man killed on Lyon Road off Shirley Street Thursday night was recently released from Her Majesty’s Prison.
He was identified by his mother as 23-year-old George Nixon.
Police captured a suspect – a 32-year-old man of Sutton Street in reference to this homicide Friday morning.
Assistant Superintendent of Police B.K. Bonamy Jr. told reporters that Nixon was killed shortly after 10:00 p.m. and was found with his face to the ground.
He was also bareback and barefoot.
“We believe he was being chased by two men armed with handguns and wearing dark clothing,” ASP Bonamy said at the scene.
“They cornered him in the back of Penn’s Convenience Store and shot him several times about the body – his arms, chest and legs.”
He also confirmed that a high powered weapon was used to commit the crime.
Both Nixon’s parents had to be restrained by police as the hearse took his body to the morgue.
“Bye Georgy, I love you I will miss you,” his mother said as the hearse pulled away.
Police sources confirmed that Nixon was recently released from prison for housebreaking but had been in and out of the system for several matters.
Police are still appealing to anyone who may have any information that can assist with their investigations into this matter to call them at the Central Detective Unit (CDU) at 502-9991.
