A serious brush fire over the weekend in Hamilton, Long Island brought to the attention the serious infrastructural needs on that island.
Four firemen went to Long Island on Saturday and with the assistance of local volunteers managed to extinguish the blaze.
In a statement, the island’s Member of Parliament Adrian Gibson said he was appreciative of the efforts of the firemen, local leaders and volunteers for their combined tireless effort.
Mr. Gibson said he has spoken to the minister for the environment and he has given an undertaking to seek to commit resources, as necessary, relative to tests of air quality and otherwise, in the coming days.
Describing the fire, Mr. Gibson said it was unusually big and caused alarm and folks to be panic-stricken because of how fast it’s moved.
A 20 foot barrier was created on the northern and southern boundaries of the fire, as well as roads were cut on the eastern and western boundaries in an effort to contain the blaze and prevent its spread to homes and/or nearby bushes.
Mr. Gibson, who will give his first speech in the House of Assembly on Monday during debate on the 2017/2018 Budget Communication, said he will lobby hard for a fire truck to be sent to Long Island.
