Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a man whose body was found on a jitney Monday afternoon, Assistant Commissioner of Police Anthony Ferguson said last evening.
ACP Ferguson said the driver of a route No. 1 jitney alerted officers at the Southern Police Station on Quakoo Street sometime after 6:00 p.m. about the incident on his bus.
“The responding officers upon examination discovered a passenger who had a gunshot injury to the lower portion of the body,” ACP Ferguson told reporters on the scene Monday evening.
“EMS personnel were contacted and arrived on the scene and discovered that there were no vital signs of life.”
He added that the investigation is in its infancy stage and that police are still trying to determine where the incident occurred.
“From all indication, it appears that there were people other than the driver on this bus and we are appealing to those persons to come forward if they have any information to provide to police,” ACP Ferguson said.
The route No. 1 jitney services the Palmdale, Marathon, East Bay Street and East Street areas.
Police refused to give any additional information about the victim noting that there are initial procedures of their investigation that must first be carried out.
However, ACP Ferguson said the driver of the bus has not been arrested nor is he a suspect at this point.
Active investigations continue.
Police are asking anyone with any information about this incident to contact them at 919, 911 or Crime stoppers at 328-TIPS.
