Grant: Bill Represents Death of Democracy

Free National Movement (FNM) Member of Parliament for Central Grand Bahama Neko Grant yesterday foreshadowed that the process the current administration has taken to legalise web shop gaming in The Bahamas will be recorded in history as the death of democracy in the country.

Mr. Grant said that while he supports the amendments to the law to modernised casino gaming, he will not support the legalisation of the web shop industry.

“This is a sad day in The Bahamas as we commence debate on a bill to legalise an illegal enterprise, this bill represents the death of democracy in The Bahamas as we know it today,” he said.

“The outcome of future elections to come will be greatly influenced by a selected few.”

Mr. Grant further slammed the web shop Gaming Bill as ‘confusing and contradicting,’ adding that it was unacceptable, disingenuous and deceptive for the government to bundle the web shop and casino bills together.

Overall, Mr. Grant stressed that the legalisation of web shops would negatively impact the future of the country’s social framework with the increase in poverty and crime.

He also renewed the opposition’s call for the government to respect the No vote from last year’s “botched” referendum.

“Many will remember January 28 2013, and the No results, few will recall the exact numbers but they will remember that the outcome was a resounding No to both questions asked, everyone will remember that they were given a choice to choose but their choice was disregarded and their wishes disrespected,”

“Bahamians everywhere will remember that day when their freedom of choice was taken away, time wasted and the undetermined amount of the country’s money squandered.”
