Gov’t To Build New Administrative Complexes

The government is hoping to get the ball rolling on constructing administrative complexes in three Family Islands – Bimini, Eleuthera and Grand Bahama.

Labour and National Insurance Minister Shane Gibson recently revealed that both the architect and urban designer have already been selected and have met with residents and local government officials.

“The drawings for both Bimini and Harbour Island, Eleuthera have been completed,” Minister Gibson revealed. “They should have been submitted to the Ministry of Works this month for final approval and once we get that final approval back, we will be going out to tender hopefully by mid-August, the beginning of September.

“They have already identified the land in Harbour Island and land has also been identified in Bimini and Eight Mile Rock, Grand Bahama.”

According to the minister, in Grand Bahama, the most appropriate spot may be the old Friendship Shopping Plaza.

In Harbour Island, it may be land once occupied by a clinic and on Bimini, the plan is to redevelop the land occupied by the administrative complex.

“Hopefully, before the end of this year, we should be able to break grounds for at least two of those administrative complexes. So, I invite members opposite or anyone who may any comments or input to please contact the Ministry of Labour and National Insurance or the National Insurance Board directly,” he said.

But aside from constructing new facilities, the government may very well have to find additional money to repair the administrative office in Upper Bogue, Eleuthera.

The facility was set afire last week, resulting in an estimate $20,000 worth of damages.

Suspected arsonist, Rudica Albury, 22, served as the administrative clerk.

She reportedly admitted falsifying accounts and stealing funds since August of 2013 during an interrogation.

According to inside sources, Albury acknowledged feeling guilty and intended to burn down the entire building but failed in her attempt.

Albury has been jailed.
