Fox Hill Day Commemorated

A host of cabinet ministers accompanied Prime Minister Perry Christie as he joined Fox Hill MP Fred Mitchell in celebrating Fox Hill Day.

Constituents have been commemorating the occasion since 1890.

Yesterday, the squadron of MPs made a round of church visits in true Fox Hill Day fashion before the event came to a climax at Fox Hill Park.

At the St. Paul’s Baptist Church service, the prime minister and his deputy took a moment to talk to some of the children in the area, whom the nation’s chief said the day is all about.

“The significance of this occasion is the little children and the hope is that they understand enough of what is taking place,” Prime Minister Perry Christie said.

“We have to ensure that they understand that what they learn today is a connection of where we’ve come from in the past. We have to make sure they understand that they are also an important component in the history of this country.”

Deputy Prime Minister Philip Davis said the event reminded him of his days growing up in Cat Island with the children doing recitations and the community coming out to celebrate their heritage together.

The community’s oldest woman Gwendolyn Clarke showed up for a brief while.

The 99-year-old was celebrated over the weekend as the mother of the year for Fox Hill.

Evangeline Rahming has been in the community for 51 years and said she takes pride in the fact that she can say she’s seen Fox Hill grow and develop as something great, despite what others may think.

“I’ve been in Fox Hill since I married Dr. J. Carl Rahming in 1962 and Fox Hill was like a little quiet village,” she said.

“But now it’s grown into a city. We have all kind of people that moved in. But the old original people are still here, steadfast, irremovable and always on the go.”

“Sometimes we have little problems here and there, but it’s nothing we can’t fix.”
Constituents gathered at the Fox Hill Park later last evening for food, drinks and entertainment.
