In yet another incident that has raised the issue of domestic violence in the country, a 21-year-old woman was allegedly murdered by her boyfriend on Wednesday a day before her birthday.

Police have confirmed that a 40-year-old man is in police custody.

Residents in the South Beach area identified the victim as Anthonique Hunter, who would have turned 22 today.

Hunter was a College of The Bahamas (COB) student.

She moved into the South Beach area less than three months ago.

According to some sources, Hunter has been dead since Tuesday night and the suspect, a taxi driver, had not slept at the one-room efficiency since that time.

Head of the Central Detective Unit (CDU) Superintendent Paul Rolle told reporters yesterday that the stabbing stemmed from an argument.

“Sometime around 11:30 a.m. we received a call from a resident in the Market Street area who indicated that a man was there who wished to speak to police,” he said.

“I had some of my officers go to the residence where they met with them. The man indicated that he was involved with an incident and he believed his female companion had been stabbed. We had him take us to an area in South Beach and he showed us the efficiency.”

Superintendent Rolle said officers had to kick the door in, in order to get inside the efficiency.

“Upon entering we found a female with multiple stab wounds to the chest,” he said.

“At that time, we took him into custody and booked him at the East Street South Police Station.EMS personnel pronounced the female dead at the scene.”

This incident follows the murder of 31-year-old Damian McKinney of Key West Street.

McKinney was killed Tuesday night while he was through Miami Street off Cordeaux Avenue.

Hunter’s death is the fourth homicide within five days.

The total homicide count for this year now stands at 93 for the year.

At this same point last year, there were 104 homicides.
