After repeated delays the multi-million dollar Critical Care Block at the Princess Margaret Hospital will be handed over to the government next week.
Health Minister Dr. Perry Gomez yesterday announced that the handover will take place on May 3, seven months after this was last slated to take place.
Dr. Gomez has however made it clear that the upcoming handover is contingent on whether all the facility’s equipment has been commissioned.
“Construction of the Critical Care Block started by the FNM (Free National Movement) is now substantially complete,” he said. “The contractor has received occupational certificate with the exception of solar panel installation.”
“…The installation of medical equipment in the operating suite is being tested and calibrated and commissioned with minor adjustments being made as necessary.”
The government has already spent $10 million on equipment for one of the facility’s labs.
“With respect to the balance of the equipment, the [Public Hospitals Authority] PHA is completing negotiations with FirstCaribbean Bank for a $35 million loan. That process will be completed within the next two weeks and will require parliament’s approval,” he said.
“I am also pleased to report that all of the equipment has been identified and tendering process is complete.
However, Free National Movement (FNM) Deputy Chairman, Dr. Duane Sands has expressed serious concern that the facility will be understaffed.
In fact, the noted cardiologist has predicted that despite having new operating rooms and intensive care beds, additional staff will be needed.
Dr. Gomez yesterday revealed that Cabinet is reviewing a proposal to hire 28 new doctors, eight of whom will be stationed on the Family Islands.
This, he said involves the transfer of 20 doctors from the PHA.
Dr. Gomez’s comments came during debate on the Medical Bill in the House of Assembly yesterday morning.
