Convicted Murderer Freed

After serving 26 years behind bars, Dwight Henfield was released from Her Majesty’s Prisons following a re-sentencing hearing before Senior Justice Jon Isaacs.

It was back on May 26, 1988 that Henfield, Garnet Jones and Derek Rolle were convicted of the murder of Charise Small and subsequently sentenced to death.

However, in 2006, the London-based Privy Council ruled that the mandatory death sentence was unconstitutional.

Henfield’s re-sentencing was finally heard on Monday.

Senior Justice Senior Justice Isaacs took into account the one year Mr. Henfield had spent on remand as well as the ‘harsh conditions” endured in HMP’s Maximum Security wing.

The convict’s probation report was also considered.

The report found that Henfield had taken advantage of the prison’s rehabilitative opportunities, appeared to have a good rapport with fellow inmates and prison officials and had expressed regret for his action.

Having spent close to 30 years in jail, he is to be released.

Henfield was represented by attorney Sonia Timothy.

Vernal Collie represented the Crown.
