Members of the New Covenant Baptist Church are in disbelief after the edifice was ransacked by thieves, who stole countless items, leaving behind thousands of dollars in damage Wednesday night.
Pastor Trajean Jadorett said it appears the culprits gained access to the church through a window in the basement.
The incident he said highlights the disturbing reality that no one is safe from crime even places regarded as sacred.
“It’s not just the church, we are situated right next door to the police station and this is the kind of brazen behaviour we have going on in society today that folks would come in to scared ground and do this kind of thing.,” Pastor Jadorett said.”This does not deter our ministry in any way. We will face this head on and deal with it the way that Christ would.”
The culprits stole computers and other equipment as well as a safe that was bolted to the ground.
The church worries that its youth and adult education programme will be greatly impacted by this act.
New Covenant Baptist Church has deep roots in the communities it serves as the church offers assistance to many low-income families.
Yet, Pastor Jadorett is of the view that the person(s) who committed this act have some intimate knowledge of the church.
“It definitely appears to me that whoever did this is familiar with the church,” he said.
“The southeastern window of the lower part of this structure and the fact that they used the window obviously shows that they had some knowledge of the building itself. I think once the investigation is completed, we will have a better idea as to who is responsible for this, but I think we are in good grounds for finding out where this will end.”
This is not the first time that New Covenant has been targeted by thieves. The church was recently broken into by thieves who stole copper wire from the East West Highway edifice.
The church’s sanctuary was not disturbed during that break-in.
Meanwhile, according to Pastor Trajean, police are following significant leads in this matter and he is convinced the culprits will be caught.
