Chinese Bahamian Business Community Donates $35,000 to Hurricane Relief Fund

More than $35,000 in cash was raised by the Chinese Bahamian Business Community in response to Save Our South (SOS) Disaster Relief efforts for the islands devastated by Hurricane Joaquin.

The SOS Group was born from a social media group of community minded Bahamians, intimately known as HeadKnowles.

On October 13, Brian Wong, president of the Chinese Community Association of The Bahamas, along with other members, including Kay Kay Tong, general manager of Central Food Store on East Street, and Lloyd Wong, general manager of Guava Restaurant, presented their contribution of building supplies to SOS, at Pinder’s Enterprises, on Prince Charles Drive.

“Everybody feels saddened by this tragedy and because of that, they wanted to see what they could do to help and bring comfort to our Bahamian brothers and sisters,” said President Wong.

He added that what the Chinese Bahamian Community learned about the horrors of Hurricane Joaquin, moved each of their members so passionately, that they donated thousands of dollars immediately, and drew overwhelming support for the hurricane relief effort.

President Wong said, “Joaquin’s survivors are in desperate need of building supplies to rebuild damaged homes and repair their roofs on the islands of Long Island, Crooked Island, Acklins Island, Rum Cay, the Exumas, San Salvador, Mayaguana, and Inagua.

“They are willing to help in any which way they can by making cash donations, so we can be able to buy different building materials. In fact, we also can have 100 portable stoves, along with a pallet of portable gas,” said President Wong.

“We are talking to the people of SOS, and they said ‘at this time that is more urgent than food.'”
