Chinese Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) is reassuring the public of its commitment to successfully completing the $39 million North Abaco Port Project, as unexpected challenges are resolved.

Country manager for CHEC Jeff Wang said the project was soon to be back on schedule, following the discovery of environmental setbacks that caused work to halt temporarily at the Coopers Town construction site.

“We are working diligently to ensure the North Abaco Port Project is a success,” said Wang. “We assure the Bahamian public and the people of North Abaco that we are working our hardest to continue construction on the development.

We are working steadfastly with the government and the entire team to get things mobilized on the construction site.”

Post groundbreaking, a blue hole was discovered and a Supplemental Environmental Impact Assessment is now underway as a guide to ensure complete safety during the construction period.

As headway is made on the SEIA, CHEC will be hosting a town hall meeting to inform the public of the progress on the port.

Despite the setbacks, CHEC continues with ongoing efforts to better the community for the residents.
Recently, the company utilized its site-clearing equipment from the North Abaco Port Project to clear the trash from a local landfill in Wood Cay.

Island Administrator Steve Pedican said the task took but a few hours because of the right equipment.
“The dumpsites have become a health hazard, attracting wild dogs, raccoons, wild cats and strong odors that, depending on wind shifts, became one of our major concerns,” he said. “We appealed to CHEC and they responded immediately and assisted us.”
