Former Free National Movement (FNM) Chairman Darron Cash says he have no reason to apologize to Attorney General Allyson Maynard-Gibson, as it would give him no satisfaction whatsoever to engage in a public spat with her.
He added that at all times he wishes to protect the integrity of her office, as she holds a significant constitutional office.
On Wednesday, Mrs. Maynard-Gibson requested that Mr. Cash apologize for his comments regarding her alleged conflict of interest with Baha Mar which she says were intentionally misleading to the public.
Mr. Cash held however, that he along with numerous members of the legal community drew the same conclusion; the attorney general’s place with the dealings of Baha Mar should be none at all.
“It is deeply sad and regrettable that the attorney general appears to be the last person prepared to acknowledge the obvious,” he said.
“Since she became the attorney general, Mrs. Maynard Gibson has piled up a dubious record of questionable judgements. With each announced decision Bahamians were left shaking their heads wondering, what in the world was she thinking.”
Mr. Cash also held that Prime Minister Perry Christie sent the attorney general to tackle a job that should have been handled by Mr. Christie himself and the failure to do so, places him at a disadvantage moving forward.
He feels no one remotely linked to the Christie administration at this stage would be able to enter into negotiations with Baha Mar without impartiality.
“The final point that must be made is that we would hope that the attorney general would draw more on her higher calling to duty than on the low threshold set by the prime minister,” Mr. Cash stated.
The attorney general has faced a barrage of criticism and concerns about a conflict of interest since she revealed that members of her family including her husband and daughters are holders of retail leases with the multi-billion dollar resort.
Mrs. Maynard-Gibson however, has insisted no such conflict exists.
